The UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program Application

The MMUF program provides the best and brightest students with a wonderful opportunity to become a part of a community of scholars. The Program seeks to address the underrepresentation of faculty of color teaching at our nation's institutions of higher education; create greater opportunities for undergraduate students of color to gain curricular and extra-curricular experiences that will better prepare them for the graduate school experience; and stimulate, encourage, and support more intense disciplinary scholarly engagement among all UNCF fellows.

Guidelines/Eligibility

- Students must be sophomores (rising juniors) majoring in a Mellon Designated field

- Students must identify a faculty mentor within their department to guide them during the two-year phase of the underaduate program

- Students must commit to participating in the Summer Institute

FACULTY CAREER ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS

The 2012 UNCF/Mellon Faculty Seminar Application

The International Seminar provides junior and senior faculty at UNCF member colleges and universities with an opportunity to enhance their teaching and/or scholarship in an international setting.

Guidelines/Eligibility

-  Candidates must teach at one of the member colleges or universities of the United Negro College Fund and must be junior or senior faculty.
-  Candidates must be tenure-tracked or tenured faculty trained or teaching in a Mellon Designated Field.

The 2012 UNCF/Mellon Faculty Seminar will take place July 5-15, 2012 in the city of Salvador, in Bahia, Brazil. The theme of this seminar, facilitated by Dr. Keisha-Khan Perry, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies, Brown University, is “Race, Rights and Rebellion”.

The 2012 Teaching and Learning Institute Application

The Teaching and Learning Institutes were established to create opportunities for UNCF faculty to come together through workshops, seminars and/or mini-conferences to share strategies, scholarship and “best practices” that help to strengthen the teaching and learning environment.

Guidelines/Eligibility
- Interested UNCF institutions must submit a 2-3-page proposal describing the proposed Teaching and Learning Institute. The proposal must identify the other UNCF institutions that will be invited to participate.
- A list of selected facilitators with accompanying biographical information must be submitted with the application. It is anticipated that persons hired to assist in the facilitation of the Teaching and Learning Institute will be recognized professionals, scholars and/or practitioners in their respective fields
- An itemized budget must be attached.
- A letter of endorsement from the Chief Academic Officer must accompany the proposal detailing how the proposed Institute will enhance the teaching and learning environment of the institution.
- Institutions that have received a Teaching and Learning Grant within the last three grant cycles are not eligible to re-apply at this time.

Host institutions that have received a Teaching and Learning grant within the last two cycles (2011, 2010) are not eligible to apply at this time.

The 2012 Faculty Residency Application

The Faculty Residency Program provides an opportunity for selected UNCF faculty members to take up to a semester away from their home institution to complete or begin a scholarly project.

Guidelines/Eligibility

-  Candidates must teach at one of the member colleges or universities of the United Negro College Fund and must be junior or senior faculty.
-  Candidates must be tenure-tracked or tenured faculty trained or teaching in a Mellon Designated field.
-  Faculty applicants must submit a letter of interest that includes a copy of their curriculum vitae and a 1-3 page proposal describing how they will spend their residency period. The proposal must include an itemized budget with verification of the level of support provided by the home institution.
-  Letters of recommendation from the Chief Academic Officer and the department chairperson are required.
-  A letter from the residency site director, if it is one other than those affiliated with the UNCF/Mellon Programs, is required.

During the 2012 grant year, two (2) summer and three (3) semester Faculty Residencies will be funded. Summer faculty residency stipends will be paid directly to the faculty fellow.
